Abstract

The history of the systemic family therapy (SFT) field is driven by a desire to effect systems change at all levels of an individual's ecology. To this end, the SFT field has historically branched out in unique and varied settings that move beyond the 50-min session. This chapter reviews the current activity of the SFT field in four distinct areas: behavioral health hospital settings, military populations, family-owned businesses, management, and government settings. In each section we highlight the current practice and research activity of SFTs as well as the unique strengths and skills SFTs bring to each setting. We also discuss how certain additional skills and resources could benefit SFTs in each area and identify how future SFT training programs could be tailored to better prepare SFTs for these settings.
