Abstract
There are increasing regulatory and financial incentives for clinicians to measure and improve the quality of care they deliver. Quality improvement (QI) has been defined by the Institute of Medicine as a set of "systematic and continuous actions that lead to measurable improvement in health-care services and the health status of targeted patient groups." Patients with cirrhosis represent an ideal population for QI because of their high morbidity and mortality, and documented deficits in care they receive. This chapter discusses how to measure quality of care, and provides a practical step-by-step approach for conducting QI among patients with cirrhosis.
