Jim E. Banta, PhD, MPH is an Associate Professor at the Loma Linda University School of Public Health and Director of the DrPH in Health Policy and Leadership Program. His research interests include health services research using large secondary data files and behavioral health. A particular area of interest is the intersection of mental and physical illness; such as serious mental illness combined with diabetes or heart disease, or binge drinking and asthma. His work is split between use of state / national hospital-related claims files to examine costs and outcomes and state/national population-based surveys to examine health behaviors. A limited area of research has been application of geographic information systems. Dr. Banta is currently a co-investigator on a NIH-Forgarty grant examining tobacco control in selected Asian countries.
